DELL LATITUDE D620 DRIVERS OS WINDOWS XP

Dell Latitude D620 weighs about 5.6lbs with a 6-cell battery, optical drive installed and the power cord and adapter. Given the fact this notebook is a magnesium-alloy casing and not too much plastic is used, the weight is pretty impressive. It’s not the lightest thin-and-light by any stretch, and it is thicker than the ThinkPad T-series of notebooks for example, but it’s still fairly comfortable to carry around in say a backpack without feeling the weight too much.

Speaking of finding wireless hotspots, Dell has included a unique feature called “Wi-Fi Catcher” located on the left side of the notebook. You can use this switch to turn off all wireless radios by putting it in the Off position, but far cooler than that, push it all the way forward and it will blink green as it searches for a Wi-Fi network and if one is present it glows solid green, if none is found it shows orange.

DELL LATITUDE D620 PERFORMANCE

Dell D620 is offered with a WXGA (1280 x 800) or WXGA+ (1440 x 900) display. The WXGA+ will give you about 26% more screen real estate.

DELL LATITUDE D620 DRIVERS OS WINDOWS XP

As mentioned before, Dell is adopting the widescreen format with the thinking that it allows business users to more easily display side-by-side document windows. The widescreen format also offers a lower overall profile, this is good for in tight spaces such as a plane, and actually means the notebooks footprint is about 2% less overall.
  • Dell Latitude D620 Laptop
  • Fully Refurbished
  • Genuine Windows Software and Licensing
  • Watch DVDs and stream Online Content
  • 3 Month RTB Warranty
The Dell Latitude D620 has a built-in ambient light sensor built-in that will control the screen brightness when on battery. For example, in a dark room the screen will dim as less brightness is needed to see the screen, but in bright light the screen will crank up in brightness so it is easier to see. When on power the screen will automatically become brighter. You can override the ambient light sensor to control brightness yourself of course.

As far as screen quality, the brightness is decent, but certainly not the best on the market and nowhere near as vivid as some of the high-end screens for consumer notebooks. It is a matte screen so you won’t get any reflection from office lighting. There is some backlight leakage from the bottom and the overall picture is slightly washed out. Below are some pictures of the screen in the dark, notice the light leakage from the bottom on the all black Windows XP screensaver background.

DELL LATITUDE D620 DESIGN

Dell Latitude D620 is most interesting in that it adopts a widescreen format, a feature that hereto date really has been pushed more in the consumer channel of notebooks. Dell reckons that business-types will prefer this format too though. After all, a widescreen (available in WXGA and WXGA+ resolution) does allow you to more easily have two windows open next to each other at the same time.

Dell Latitude D620 hinges also have a new barrel design to withstand vibration better than past Latitude notebooks. Another moving part on the Dell Latitude D620 is the screen latch, this is also constructed of metal to provide durability and a nice look to boot.

Dell Latitude D620 is very sturdy; it uses an all magnesium-alloy case. This results in strong overall physical protection of the notebook, worry-free of case cracks appearing or problems with excessive flexing. The hinges are constructed of steel, Dell claims they have been tested for up to 20,000 cycles (openings and closings) to assure freedom from loosening and wobble.

The most important thing to protect in a notebook is in most cases the hard drive (where all of your data is stored), data is irreplaceable and sometimes invaluable, while hardware not quite so. As such Dell Latitude D620 has implemented StrikeZone technology that reduces the amount of shock experienced in the hard drive area during a drop situation. You can also get Shock Resistant hard drives in 60GB and 80GB capacities that offer further physical protection to data.

Below are the results gained from running PCMark04 on the Dell Latitude D620, it is compared to a competing thin-and-light ThinkPad T60 notebook with a 2.00GHz ATI Radeon X1400 configuration — the ThinkPad T60 is more expensive than the D620 given its higher configuration.

AMAZON ANKER LIGHTNING TO USB IPHONE CABLE 3FT REVIEWS

iPhone Charger, Anker Lightning to USB iPhone Cable 3ft, A major problem with just about every Lightning-USB cable on the market is some kind of warping that occurs at the lightning end over time. Many friends have had the same problem, regardless of brand. This is no better or worse than the genuine Apple cable, use with care and always insert/remove the lightning end by holding the hard plastic and not by tugging on the cable itself.

If I had to buy an extra Lightning cable or replace one that’s broken, I’d choose the 3-foot Anker PowerLine Lightning cable, because it hits all the right notes in terms of design, functionality, and price. It’s impossible for us to test every Lightning cable, but having tested hundreds of them since Apple replaced the 30-pin connector in 2012, and after comparing the PowerLine cable against our previous top picks, we can say that Anker’s cable stands out from the crowd.

REVIEWS USB AMAZON ANKER

Our long-term testing showed that this kind of super-thorough testing was less important than the durability of each cable. Sure, some Anker Amazon Lightning USB Cable include a certain kind of shielding around their wires, or filler fiber (both good things, in theory), but none of our top picks ended up performing noticeably better or worse—in terms of data or charging functionality—than the others over the months and years since we first tested them. What did matter was how well a given cable held up to regular use: Did the Anker Amazon Lightning USB Cable still work after six months or a year? Did the Anker Amazon Lightning USB Cable start to come apart from the plug?

Based on this real-world experience, we decided that our testing should instead focus primarily on two things: durability and charging speed. Wirecutter readers want cables that will hold up over time without fraying, splitting, or otherwise falling apart, and they want Anker Amazon Lightning USB Cable that will allow them to charge their devices at the fastest possible speed. We also considered only MFi-licensed cables to ensure compatibility with all iOS devices and all versions of iOS.

That said, plenty of cables fulfill those criteria, and the differences in price and functionality between good Anker Amazon Lightning USB Cable is small. Though we could spends dozens of additional hours researching and testing more Anker Amazon Lightning USB Cable to find minute differences, we’d never be able to test them all, and even if we were to do so, the good ones would test similarly. In addition, because Anker Amazon Lightning USB Cable are such a commodity product, we had to change our previous top picks several times because companies such as Monoprice and Amazon routinely discontinue Anker Amazon Lightning USB Cable and replace them with different models, or they change (sometimes silently) the construction or components.

What we can do is find Anker Amazon Lightning USB Cable that satisfy our criteria, that come from a reputable company we’ve had good experiences with as both customers and reviewers, and that we’ve been using ourselves long enough to feel confident in their durability. So instead of saying, “This is the best cable,” we’re telling you the Anker Amazon Lightning USB Cable we’d buy ourselves.

ASUS ZENBOOK UX310UA FB485T WINDOWS 10 DRIVERS

Asus ZenBook UX310UA is a premium and stylish 13.3-inch Ultrabook that doesn’t break the bank. With a starting price of just £550, this mid-range laptop comes with high-end features. These include a beautiful, thin and light metal-coated body, Intel Skylake processors, solid-state storage, a USB Type-C port and a backlit keyboard.

With a retail price of £799.99, my review model is the top-spec UX310UA Featuring a i7-6500U dual-core processor, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, 500GB secondary hard drive and a QHD+ resolution display. Considering the Dell XPS 13 costs £100 more for the base i5 Full HD model, I’m really impressed with what you get for your money.

If you’re on a tighter budget, the entry-level ASUS UX310UA sports an i3-6100U processor, 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD and a Full HD display.

ASUS ZENBOOK UX310UA FB485T PERFORMANCE

ASUS ZENBOOK UX310UA FB485T WINDOWS 10 DRIVERS

  • Ultra light at just 1.45KG & incredibly slim at just 18.33mm.
  • Excellent Full HD screen for brilliant viewing experience.
  • Wide viewing angles and vivid colours.
  • No compromising on sound quality, Sonic Master speakers offer great listening experience.

If I have one complaint, it’s that the chunky bezels detract from the high-end aesthetic of the laptop. Next to a Dell XPS 13 and its “infinity-edge” bezels, the UX310UA looks a little dated. It’s a minor gripe but something I’d like to see addressed on future models. Asus ZenBook UX310UA 1
As for ports, the ASUS UX310UA offers a peculiar combination of old and new. There are three USB ports, but only one of them is the faster USB 3.0 type. It’s odd to see two USB 2.0 ports on a 2016 laptop – although it isn’t much of an issue if you just use these to plug in mice, keyboards or other peripherals.

The good news is the ASUS UX310UA does offer one of the latest reversible USB 3.1 (Type-C) ports, which is a nice piece of future-proofing. Elsewhere there’s a full-size HDMI port, headphone and microphone combo port, card reader and DC power port. It’s hard to think of anything that’s missing here.Asus ZenBook UX310UA.

ASUS ZENBOOK UX310UA DESIGN

You have the choice of Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) or 3,200 x 1,800-pixel display, depending on which model of the ASUS ZENBOOK UX310UA FB485T you go for.

My review model sports the higher-resolution QHD+ panel, which looks terrific – but I’m not convinced that anyone needs it on a 13.3-inch laptop. You’ll definitely need to make use of Windows scaling (which actually works well in Windows 10) to make the text and icons comfortably usable.
While I appreciate the sharpness (276ppi), unless you put the screen right up to your eye it isn’t something you’ll ever notice. I also believe it has a significant impact on battery life, but we’ll talk more about that later.

What I do like is the IPS panel, which is bright and offers wide viewing angles. Whether you’re watching a Netflix movie, YouTube video or just browsing the web, the display is nice to look at. Asus’ quoted 500:1 contrast ratio is lower than average, and means blacks are less inky and whites are a tad duller than you might expect given the type of panel used. For the price, though, the screen is adequate.

On the plus side, the solid 375cd/m2 maximum brightness combined with the matte panel makes it easy to use the ASUS UX310UA when you’re out and about. I found the display remained readable even in direct sunlight (hard to find during the Autumn in the UK).

The full-sized chiclet-style keyboard on the ASUS UX310UA is above average. While the keys do feel a little spongier than I‘d like, they offer a good amount of travel; I was comfortable typing on the keyboard within seconds of using it for the first time. It’s fully backlit, too – a feature the ASUS UX303 lacked – which not only adds to the laptop’s premium aesthetic but makes it easier to use in the dark.

There’s a hint of flex in the keyboard if you press firmly toward the back-middle of the keyboard, but it isn’t something you’ll notice with normal use.

The big, glass trackpad feels great. The smooth surface has two built-in buttons integrated into the bottom of the trackpad. I found it slightly less responsive than I’d like out of the box, but increasing the cursor sensitivity by a notch in Windows easily resolved the issue.

On my top-spec review model, editing a 1080p video in Adobe Premiere Pro and touching up photos in Adobe Lightroom was smooth and showed no sign of slowdown or stutter. Render times will be longer than with proper quad-core processors, but you’ll be paying a lot more for that performance. Gaming is a mixed bag – make no mistake that Ultrabooks, including the UX310UA, aren’t meant for anything more than light gaming.

OTHER FROM ASUS ZENBOOK UX310UA FB485T

Battery life ASUS ZENBOOK UX310UA FB485T is decidedly average on the ASUS ZENBOOK UX310UA. After watching a two-hour Netflix movie, with power-saving mode enabled and brightness set to 50%, the ASUS ZENBOOK UX310UA was left with just 55% battery. So you’d be lucky to get more than four hours of video playback.

With general use I found I got about six hours of battery from the ASUS ZENBOOK UX310UA, which is actually spot on with Asus’ quoted battery life from the three-cell 48Wh battery. You should be able to get through a full working day if you lower the brightness a touch, but it certainly isn’t a match for the XPS 13 or MacBook Pro.

However, this is my experience with the QHD+ resolution model of the ASUS ZENBOOK U310UA. I haven’t tested the Full HD version, but I’d expect battery life to be better.

The ASUS UX310UA speakers have been designed in collaboration with Harmon Kardon and use Asus’ own SonicMaster technology.

In reality, the speakers are decent – but nothing to write home about. For the odd YouTube video they’re definitely good enough, but for anything else the lack of bass will be apparent (par for the course with Ultrabooks). However, since the speakers are positioned on the bottom of the laptop facing downwards, they’ll resonate off a hard surface and improve the bass. Still, a good pair of headphones is definitely your best bet.

ASUS ZENBOOK UX305LA DRIVERS WINDOWS 10

That aside, the ASUS UX305LA gets the interior design and the IO from the ASUS UX305FA. There’s a fairly large palm-rest with blunt tapered edges around, and while this model does not get the very low profile of the ASUS UX305FA, is still slim enough so the edges won’t cut into your wrists in any way while using it on a desk.

As for the IO, you’ll be getting 3x USB 3.0 slots, a card-reader (an SD card will only go in half-way though) and a micro-HDMI connector. It’s a pity Asus could not make room for a full-sized HDMI port on this thing. Some adapters will be included in the pack, but not a micro-HDMI to HDMI dongle. The DCIN is placed on the right edge and personally I prefer to have it on the left and leave the right side as uncluttered as possible.

Asus will offer the ASUS ZENBOOK UX305LA in a bunch of different configurations, with Core i3, i5 or i7 Broadwell U processors, 4 or 8 GB of RAM, 128 to 512 GB SSDs and either a FHD or a QHD+ matte display.

ASUS ZENBOOK UX305LA PERFORMANCE

ASUS ZENBOOK UX305LA DRIVERS WINDOWS 10

ASUS ZENBOOK UX305LA is almost perfection in affordable ultra-portable laptops. Its stylish, well built, incredibly light and has a screen, keybaord and battery life to rival the best.
  • Intel Core M processing delivers laptop performance without compromising of battery life
  • Full HD screen makes high-detailed films, games and everyday browsing
  • This is a fully-fledged broadwell part in terms of its power saving features
  • Massive battery life from a smaller battery
  • Full-size SD card reader and a microHDMI

Aesthetically, the ASUS UX305LA WINDOWS 10 is simpler than all the Asus ultrabooks before. Previous Zenbooks sported a pattern of concentric circles on the hood in one way or another and that particular detail is gone here, leaving a smooth, plain metallic lid cover that feels a lot like the ones on the Apple Macbook Air or the Dell XPS 13. The only element breaking the spartan design is the shiny logo. We do have what Asus calls the Aurora Metallic version here, but they’ll also offer a darker color scheme called Obsidian Stone, which will feature the rippled pattern.

The entire body is made out of aluminum, which covers the hood, the interior and the belly. In fact, the only plastic element is the bezel around the screen, flanked by a thin layer or protective rubber, meant to ensure that the display won’t get in contact with the laptop’s body when the screen is closed.

I have one more thing to add here: there are two tiny plastic feet on the laptop’s back edge and the device is actually lifted on those feet when you open the display past 90 degrees. That makes it rather difficult to keep in place on a desk, especially if it’s a shinny one, since the plastic feet provide very little friction, unlike the actual rubber feet on the belly. But at the same time this trait creates extra room below the laptop which will help with airflow.

Speaking of airflow, since there’s a Broadwell U platform inside the ASUS ZENBOOK UX305LA a fan and better ventilation were needed. As a result, Asus added some intake vents on the belly, to complement those under the hinge. The exhaust is still behind the hinge, but there’s a bigger gap between the actual hinge and the cooling grills on this design than on previous Zenbooks, which creates more space for the heat to go out or the fresh air to get in. And that actually helps, as you’ll see below, in the temperatures section.

ASUS ZENBOOK UX305LA DESIGN

The screen on the ASUS ZENBOOK UX305LA is splendid, except for one aspect that Asus could actually address on the final release models: color calibration. Greens, Blues and especially the White Point were completely skewed out of the box on this unit that I got to play with, but a calibration run with my Spyder4 turned the panel in one of the most color-accurate I’ve seen in a while on 13 inch laptops. This sort of calibration should be included by default, cause the panel is really good and Asus needs to take advantage of it.

That aside, you’ll enjoy the brightness, contrast and viewing angles of this display. Since it’s matte and fairly bright, it can also be used in well illuminated rooms and even outside. It does not support touch though and a model with a touchscreen will not be available, from what I know right now. But if you do want a Zenbook with modern hardware and a touchscreen, you should check out the ASUS ZENBOOK UX305LA.

The keyboard on the ASUS UX305LA feels identical to the one on the Zenbook UX305FA.

I’ve typed about 5000 words on it the last weekend, including this review, and I can conclude that it’s pretty good for a thin and light computer. The keys travel fairly deep into the chassis, deeper than on my Dell XPS 13 for instance, and feel mostly firm and responsive.

However, they lack a precise click response which means you can’t intuitively tell whether a hit has been registered properly or not, at least with my style of typing. That lead to a fair amount of missed strokes in the first hours of using this keyboard. I kind of got used to having to hit each key a bit harder after a while, but that had a negative impact on my typing speed.

I also found that typing on this keyboard is rather noisy, with the Space key being especially loud, which could be an inconvenience for those you working in quiet environments.

The layout on the other hand is standard for a Zenbook and mostly alright. You do have to live with the tiny arrow keys and the Power button integrated as the top-right key.

ASUS ZENBOOK UX305LA REVIEWS

Software wise, the ASUS ZENBOOK UX305LA comes with Windows 8.1 of course and a few preinstalled programs, both a bunch of Asus apps (including one called GiftBox which is basically a doorway for various other Asus software) and a few trials (Office, antivirus, etc). You should get rid of them all or better yet, if the Microsoft Store is going to sell this laptop in your country, try to get one of their Signature Edition versions with no bloatware at all.

All these aside, the ASUS ZENBOOK UX305LA is fast. This particular configuration got the best benchmark results of any Core i5-5200U configuration tested so far, but since it isn’t a final production unit, I’m not going to include them here.

The laptops flies in everyday use, boots up quickly, resumes from sleep in about one second and handled well all the basic tasks I threw at it, including browsing, watching all sorts of video content and playing some PC games like Starcraft 2, Dota 2 or Dirt 3. The Intel HD 5500 Graphics can only offer that much though, so don’t expect it to be spectacular for gaming. I’m not going to get in depth here, but you should check out my review of the Dell XPS 13 for what exactly you can expect from this Intel platform in games.

Asus UX305LA has a high frequency vibration when charging. You cannot see it vibrate but when you touch the upper part/above the keys, you can feel this. It vibrates when charging even when the fan is off or even when the computer is power off. The vibration is stronger when the battery is lower/below 20%, and you may feel the back of screen vibrates as well.

HP LASERJET PRO P1102 PRINTER DRIVER

I have owned an earlier model, an HP LASERJET PRO P1102, for about 8 years and found it to be an excellent and reliable printer so when I bought a new Windows 10 desktop computer I decided to again go with HP and I purchased a LaserJet Pro P1102 printer which looks identical to the HP LASERJET PRO P1102 and appears to work the same.

I had problems with the installation because the disc supplied by HP with the printer did not seem to work with Windows 10 and in the end I had to find a suitable driver direct from the HP website. This worked fine and I can thoroughly recommend the printer as inexpensive and reliable.

AVAST SECURELINE VPN DOWNLOAD FREE AND REVIEWS

AVAST SECURELINE VPN Security, What Is Avast Secureline ?Watch When you're connected to a VPN, the service creates an encrypted tunnel between your computer and the company's server. Information sent through this tunnel is unreadable to anyone who tries to intercept or spy on it. Also, if you're trying to hide your IP address, you're in luck, because a VPN changes your apparent IP address while active.

Of course, using a VPN doesn't guard against all dangers. Malicious ads, malware, and other network attacks can still harm your computer and steal personal information. I highly recommend using antivirus software to keep your computer protected from all angles.

For its relatively high price, I expected more features from Avast SecureLine. There's no option to change VPN protocols, and the protocol used by the service is not easily discoverable on its website. Avast SecureLine does not provide ad blocking, which is a relatively rare feature but one that is available in Spotflux's offering and in F-Secure Freedome, too.

Other VPN services that offer special features include TorGuard VPN, which is designed with BitTorrent users in mind, and has servers designed to provide anonymity and speed for downloading torrents. You can also purchase a static IP from TorVPN for an additional fee. NordVPN has a variety of specialty servers, among the most intriguing of which is Tor-over-VPN, which creates a secure connection to a Tor entry point, providing maximum anonymization and protection. Avast offers nothing similar to these offerings.

    ABOUT AVAST SECURELINE VPN REVIEWS

Avast SecureLine presence on your computer is very minimal. You can access some of its key functions through a system tray icon, but you'll probably use the main app. This is a small, single window that provides access to all of Avast SecureLine features with ease.

You can select a server from a pull-down menu, or let Avast SecureLine choose the closest (and probably fastest) server. Though it's simple, I would prefer a search box to make finding specific servers easier. Also, I really like how NordVPN shows the popularity and latency of each server, making it easier to choose a good one.

Beyond that, Avast SecureLine has little to offer aside from a setting to automatically activate when connecting to an unknown network. Other services, like PureVPN, include a Kill Switch that prevents apps from transmitting information if the VPN becomes disconnected.

Of course, numbers don't always reflect experience. To get a feel for how VPNs perform, I connect to an Australian VPN server before browsing some websites, loading up Netflix, and trying to stream increasingly higher quality videos from YouTube.

While SecureLine didn't have exemplary speed scores, I did find it to be quite zippy when browsing the Web. It also felt like a solid connection, unlike other VPN services which feel more like tuning in a distant radio station. Netflix loaded quickly but the streaming service's new VPN policies prevented any video content from loading. On YouTube, I was pleased to see videos load quickly, though not at HD quality. Still, they loaded in at 480p, which is better than most other VPN services can manage. When I switched to 4K streaming, it took quite a while to load only a few seconds of video. TorVPN was the only service I've yet found that handled video better. In fact, TorVPN makes a special effort to keep Netflix accessible and offers servers specifically for high-speed video streaming.

    PERFORMANCE AVAST SECURELINE

Avast knows what it's doing with security software, and the Windows client was one of the most polished and professional we've tried. Installation was quick and hassle-free, it was supremely easy-to-use, and everything worked just as we expected.

A lot of this was due to the simplicity of the service. There are no complex settings to get in the way: you just launch the client, click Connect to access the closest server, or choose your preferred location from a list.

If you try to connect to an unsecured hotspot then SecureLine will also pop up and ask if you'd like it to protect you, a handy extra as it's easy to forget to connect manually.

This all makes for a smooth and straightforward experience, and the news only got better when testing began. In our tests*, our best-case UK-UK connection showed latency was up by a third, but download speeds saw a minimal fall of around 5% compared to what we would normally get, and were consistently over 35Mbps.

SecureLine US-UK speeds were also well above average. Latency doubled and upload speeds dropped by two-thirds, but downloads were still averaging around 28Mbps. That was within 20% of our no-VPN speed results, and two to three times the rates we've seen with many competitors. Avast may be expensive, but at least you can see where the money is going.

    PRIVACY AVAST SECURELINE VPN

Avast has so many services and applications that it can be a challenge to find policy details on AVAST SecureLine, but head off to the FAQs section of the support site and you'll uncover some clues.

The company explains that there's no logging of your internet activities, the sites you access, packet data or even the bandwidth used. That's a good start, although as with many other VPNs there's no detail on what might be logged when you initially connect to the service.

Avast also states that it won't sell your data to third-parties, or insert ads into your browser.

We couldn't find any information on how Avast would handle legal requests for VPN data. But as Avast is a Czech-based company with a strong incentive to maintain user privacy, and big enough to afford the best lawyers, we suspect the company won't hand anything over easily.

Other issues in the small-print included confirmation that torrents are allowed, although only at Avast's data centre locations. There are nine of these covering the US, UK, Europe and South America.

If you're tired of wondering whether a VPN provider can be trusted, Avast SecureLine should appeal immediately. It's a simple VPN from the popular antivirus provider Avast Software, so you can be sure that the firm knows what it’s doing and you're going to get an acceptable level of service.

This doesn't translate into a lengthy list of features, however. There's no tracker or ad-blocking, no real configurability, an average set of 27 locations in 19 countries – it's not bad, more focused on being ‘just good enough’.

    BEST 2017 WINDOWS 10 REVIEW

WINDOWS 10, This release marks Microsoft continuously making good on its “Windows as a Service” approach to developing Windows 10 beyond that first release. The Anniversary Update of last summer refined the Start screen and Action Center interface and brought improvements to its Edge browser, and introduced the Ink Workspace, concentrating on the daily features you likely use the most.

The Creators Update, however, brings more new features and functions than you can keep up with, but focused on areas that revolve around creating or enjoying content. Whether that be books, gaming, drawing or even 3D modeling, Windows 10 now does those things way better. \

Of course, some key tools, like the Edge browser and Cortana have received upgrades, too. And, Windows 10 now finally gets a night-time screen mode in Night Light. Microsoft has also brought about major improvements to security and privacy (or at least transparency) in Windows 10.

    NIGHT LIGHT ON WINDOWS 10

    BEST 2017 WINDOWS 10 REVIEW

What’s even better than competing solutions is how you can adjust the tone of the color change in addition to the standard setting of whether the mode kicks in at sunset local time or activates within set hours.

Getting the smallest – but perhaps most welcome – change out of the way, Microsoft’s answer to Night Shift on macOS Sierra is an effective and welcome feature for people that tend to use computers at all hours of the night.

    PAINT 3D ON WINDOWS 10

The way in which Paint 3D communicates how to create in a new dimension so easily for the average user, yet offers the depth to please them as they increase in skill, could do a lot of good for the 3D printing scene, as well as VR and so many other fields further down the road.

Granted, this is by no means a professional-grade 3D modeling app – this is purely meant for the vast majority of Windows 10 users. (Though, you can export anything created in Paint 3D as 3D-ready FBX or 3MF files for 3D printers.)

Then again, it’s clear that this app has the capacity to allow for quite a bit of complexity in what can be created, too. Most of that simplicity comes down to how intuitively the app communicates three dimensions in a two-dimensional space. Clever, minimalist use of sliders and other toggles allow you to shift your creation’s position(s) on either axis.

The coolest-sounding feature of the major Windows 10 changes in the Creators Update doesn’t disappoint. When seeing it firsthand, creating three dimensional pieces of art truly is as simple as Microsoft demonstrated it on stage at the update’s reveal event.

Of course, a wide selection of pre-loaded creation templates – like goldfish – will help newcomers out immensely. Naturally, it wouldn’t be Paint without the ability to freehand in 3D, and thus comes the desire to share those custom creations. That’s where Remix.com, Microsoft’s online portal for sharing these Paint 3D projects, comes into play.

Regardless, we’re already impressed with what Paint 3D can do, and only hope it grows from here. Oh, and don’t worry, the old Paint remains untouched.

GAMING PERFORMANCE ON WINDOWS 10 REVIEWS

Beam’s major claim to fame here, though, is that it maintains sub-second latency from the broadcaster’s executions in-game to those moments being displayed to your PC screen via stream. In other words, for broadcasters, this reduction in the time between what you’re doing in-game and your viewers seeing it makes interacting either way that much more interesting.

GAMING PERFORMANCE ON WINDOWS 10 REVIEWS

Like Game Mode, Beam is, again, a function of the Game Bar. Upon pressing that dedicated broadcasting button on the Game Bar, and then just a few clicks and toggles after that, you’re broadcasting to Beam viewers worldwide. That’s after creating a Beam account, as well as an Xbox Live account if you haven’t already, of course.

However, there’s an issue with this. While we’ve seen firsthand how simple it is to get streaming using Beam, and broadcasters know how complex this can be, you can only broadcast to Beam. Of course, this makes sense, but aren’t the type of people that would benefit most from super-simple streaming more interested in broadcasting to Facebook or somewhere else their friends are more likely to be?

And that’s not to mention how dead simple Microsoft has made it to stream to Beam (teehee) from Windows 10.

A Microsoft engineer seemed to think this was a good point when we made it to him just after demonstrating Beam for us recently – so, hey, maybe that dream will come true.

Ultimately, Microsoft has just made gaming a much bigger consideration of the Windows 10 environment. It even has its own section in the Windows 10 Settings pane: “Gaming”.

Microsoft is also looking to seriously up the reach of, and community around, games played on Windows 10 with a new feature called Beam. In reality an acquisition made by the firm recently, Beam is a PC game streaming and broadcasting platform similar to that of Twitch, replete with its own streaming network via web browser, converted into a baked-in Game Bar feature.

The most exciting, but least proven, feature to come in this update is Game Mode, a new toggle that’s now part of the Windows 10 Game Bar (which too has seen some upgrades, but more on that in a moment). Game Mode tells your system to reallocate CPU and GPU hardware resources to prioritize the gaming application at hand when it’s the active, full-screen application in use.

The new set of, well, settings allows you to tweak how the Game Bar is summoned or whether it’s on at all, as well as customize keyboard shortcuts to activate its various functions. There are also toggles for Game DVR, like changing save location, enabling background recording, and setting frame rate and video quality among others.

Rounding out the Gaming settings are broadcasting controls like audio quality, volumes, which camera to use and more – the Game Mode setting is just an activation toggle.

Microsoft has been beating the drum of the PC gaming renaissance since the debut of Windows 10, but has ramped up the tempo with the past few major updates. In keeping with the crescendo, the Creators Update will likely have the biggest impact on gamers of any gaming-focused Windows 10 improvements to date.

The results, as Microsoft claims, are steadier frame rates than before, notably with games that particularly tax a given system’s resources.

We’ve already covered how Windows 10 Game Mode works in great detail, and will test the extent of its impact on gaming once the software is final starting April 11. Though, Microsoft already warns that Game Mode brings the most benefit to systems that aren’t absolutely optimized for gaming.

SECURITY AND PRIVACY ON WINDOWS 10 REVIEWS

Another oft-teased feature is “Dynamic lock,” which allows the PC to automatically lock when the webcam detects that the user has walked away from the device. However, this feature was too not available for testing with this early software, so we’ll have to test it out in full come April 11.

SECURITY AND PRIVACY ON WINDOWS 10 REVIEWS

For the IT folks, Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) portal will now link to Office 365 ATP, so that IT managers can follow threats all the way from the source (for example, an email) to the problems it’s caused on a system or worse.

All this considered, probably the most useful tool in the new suite is “Fresh start.” This tool allows you to reinstall a clean version of Windows 10 on your PC, maintaining your personal files but deleting any third party apps that came pre-installed on your device or installed thereafter. If you just bought a Windows 10 PC from a big name vendor that’s loaded with bloatware, this is the tool for you, and something Microsoft should be commended for finally taking a stand on.

As for privacy, Microsoft wasn’t joking about the lengths it went to for improving transparency. For a start, the new setup experience is far friendlier and fully voice-acted for clarity. The voice-over clearly describes the purpose of each function as it relates to privacy, and the design no longer buries options with loads of jargon-filled text.

However, don’t expect Microsoft’s stance on the data that Windows 10 collects to change much, although it claims to have reduced the amount of basic, anonymized information that it gathers. For now, at least Microsoft has simplified its messaging on what data it collects (and at times shares) in two categories, not three: “Basic” and “Full”.

Microsoft has vastly improved its security and privacy measures for Windows 10 in the Creators Update, namely with a new Windows Defender Security Center. This new app takes in all of the functions of the original Windows Defender virus scanning and the like and couples them with new features.

One of the most interesting of which is the Device Health Advisor, which, while not yet entirely functional in our early test software, is expected to provide information on key system functions and their status through a scanning tool not dissimilar from Windows Defender itself.

    BUILT-IN WINDOWS 10 APPS

Groove has come on leaps and bounds since earlier versions of the app. It finally has a thumbnail media player control that pops up when you hover over the Groove icon in the task bar when there's music playing. In Anniversary Update we particularly like the Your Groove playlists that automatically create various playlists of your tracks – long tracks, tracks that are getting played a lot on the Groove service, tracks you haven't listened to in a while, tracks to help you cope with Monday mornings.

    BUILT-IN WINDOWS 10 APPS

Maps continues to improve. In Anniversary Update you can see multiple maps and locations on different tabs, view traffic, accidents and traffic cameras – and even draw routes on a map with your finger or a pen, then measure the distance or get directions (which is far easier than right clicking and dragging pushpins to get the route you want).

The Groove Music app (named for the music subscription service you might once have known as Xbox Music) certainly pushes the Groove Music Pass subscription in the new Explore section – but it also works well with music on your PC or OneDrive (it can be slow to index music on a network drive).

If you tried an earlier version of this, don't despair; it now has an excellent set of features and is fast and responsive. It also has the dialler that was missing in early versions, along with video calls and chat (both of which can be one to one or group conversations).

Sport and News stay useful, even if they still feel a little superfluous. They start quickly but you may use them most as live tiles in the Start menu. While diehard sports fans may not get enough information from the Sport app, News is a decent aggregator of stories (the page covering local news sources is especially good). The Money app is handy if you track shares or want to follow the market. You can still get the Reader app from the Store, but it's no longer installed by default.

However, the operating system's built-in apps are still improving, and Anniversary Update adds some extras. The new Photos app shows you all the pictures on your PC and in your OneDrive account, with some handy editing tools. It's fast, responsive and easy to use.

The Mail and Calendar apps don't match Outlook – either the desktop or the smartphone versions – but they're perfectly functional and competent apps.

With social media integration gone (Twitter and Facebook wouldn't play along and other social networks don't seem interested), the People app is reduced to a basic address book. You can't even select multiple contacts to delete or link them together (you can only link contacts one by one).

    VERDICT WINDOWS 10 REVIEWS

The quality of these remains mixed: Mail and Calendar are competent but a long way behind the versions on Windows Mobile with Outlook, Groove is shaping up to be an excellent media player (although you need to pay for a Groove Pass or put your music on OneDrive to make the most of it) and the Skype is at last fully usable. Edge has also graduated into a viable state. And not only have desktop apps not been pushed aside, Microsoft is working on making them look better on high DPI, multi-screen systems.

But mostly, the Creators Update solidifies the success Windows 10 has shown itself to be over the last year. Installation is simple, performance is generally excellent, security is improved (with more options for businesses) – and the most compelling thing about Windows 10 is that it just works. There's not really a learning curve as there was with Windows 8 or 8.1. Even if people don't get to grips with features like the taskbar search or Task View, it won't actually take anything away from their core experience of the OS. Pretty much everything that most people will need is in the Start menu or Action Center.

Ultimately, something for everyone in Windows 10 Creators Update, from Night Light to improvements to gaming and Windows Ink, as well as a new e-reader in Edge and a Paint 3D app.

That said, it still has its share of irritations, and there are some people who are so comfortable on Windows 7 (or even 8.1) that they won't want to upgrade until those OS’s get long in the tooth (or they replace the older peripherals for which hardware makers haven't put out device drivers).

Microsoft remains committed to the idea of universal apps, which now run on Xbox One (and HoloLens, for the few people who have access to it) as well as on Windows Mobile, and Store apps in general (which, confusingly, might not).

Plus, knowing that there’s even more to come after the Creators Update instills some good faith that Windows 10 will continue to improve.
